Well, here are the stats on twitter, for what that's worth.

My intention has been to follow people/institutions etc. that have something to do with art, either artists that do landscapes, galleries, curators, art critics, museums, and places I like.

Seeking information and contacts with others, I have a distinct negative reaction to those whose ratio of following is lower than their followers. I reject some out of hand.

Perhaps I'll change my mind when I'm popular. I doubt it. I see it as a disinterest in self education.

2012 Art Challenge

2012 should be a terrific year with a tremendous amount to be done.

Over the past month I've started to learn how to use Twitter and Facebook. It's taken some time, and I don't have a very good handle on how to use them quickly and painlessly.

Whether or not either turns out to be the wonder the world claims, we'll see.

I'm going to document the process, and other organizational processes I'm working on, so I can both follow my own progress, so you can, and, if applicable, you might find it useful.

I am attempting to use social media to both increase my own awareness of what is going on in parts of the art world that can help me gain viewers and information.

This year I plan to start painting more, some pictures from the ground up in acrylic and pastels. I have joined the California Art Club, and found a few artists, so far, whose work appeals to me, and who I plan to contact to see if I can acquire some lessons with them.

I have also purchased a computer based art management program that should help me manage where my art is, art shows and contact management. This is called GYST. http://www.gyst-ink.com/

In the process of organizing my art work, I will also be accumulating works I can write more about with the intention of creating some brochures and handouts to help promote my work. This, perhaps, in the mistaken belief that the more people know about what they are looking at, the more it might be appreciated.

so it may be easier to isolate each of these threads.

I currently have 16 works in 3 art venues in California and I don't know how many locally at The Satellite, an office space rental for part-time use here in Felton. I had applied to a show in Pasadena for which I would have had to prep more pictures if I had been accepted, but, happily, in a way, I have not been, so I now have time to focus on the organizational stuff I need to do.

Santa Cruz County Bank Chooses 12 Larry Darnell Images for Show

Santa Cruz County Bank for its "Into the Woods" show has chosen 12 of Larry Darnell's tree images for this 9 artist joint show. The show runs October 18 - January 18, 2012 at 5 bank locations.

In witness to the natural beauty, strength and mythical character of trees, nine artists share their personal and universal perspectives on the earth's most cherished living resource. Spanning from below the earth up to the sky, trees provide sustenance, shelter and bounty for our planet. On a local note, trees hold significant value in Santa Cruz County's history through logging and tourism.

"Trees are one of the living subjects I find most appealing. While they are rooted they are still very dynamic, and their sense of time is very much not in sync with our own," Darnell said. "They make choices over very long periods of time, and, of course, are largely responsible for us having the privilege of being here."

Foundation For Photo Art In Hospitals Chooses Larry Darnell Sierra Nevada Image

The Foundation for Photo/Art in Hospitals recently choose a photograph "Mosquito Lake" by Larry Darnell for their collection. The Foundation for Photo/Art in Hospitals is a non-profit publicly supported organization dedicated to placing colorful, soothing photographs of nature in hospitals to give comfort and hope to patients and their families, visitors, and caregivers.

"Mosquito Lake" is was shot at the High Sierra lake of the same name, near Ebbett's Pass on highway 4. One of many mountain subjects, Darnell stated, "I have a love for mountain solitude and beauty both enjoy being there and then sharing it with others through my work."

The unique mission of the Foundation is to place large, framed photographs of nature and beautiful places from around the world in hospitals to give comfort and hope to patients and their families, visitors, and caregivers. Studies show that nature art has a beneficial effect on relieving a patient’s stress and anxiety. The photographs are intended to provide color and an atmosphere of compassion where healing is encouraged.

"Snowy Night" Chosen for "After Dark" Show

"Snowy Night" a 30 second exposure taken during a Sierra snow storm was chosen by juror and photographer Tom Paiva for the national juried show After Dark at the Vermont Photospace Gallery Essex Junction, Vermont. Tom has been a commercial photographer for over 20 years, specializing in industrial and architectural subjects.

Night photography has been a passion for him for over 25 years and always tries to incorporate it in his commercial work. His statement for this show: When I review a night photograph, one of the most important criteria is the balance of light from the extreme highlights to the deepest shadows, regardless of whether it is b+w or color. This tonality is important to keep the viewers interest. A night shot should have a sense of mystery and the composition should make your eye move around the image. Of course, it must be technically perfect to make the grade.

I was a little surprised this image made the cut, not have a bowlful of experience with night shooting and having been shot with a point and shoot camera, but it made the grade.

2 Works Chosen for San Joaquin Show

2 photographs, ALEXANDRIA RHYTHMS AFTER DEMUTH and ATGET IN THE GOLD COUNTRY, were chosen by Carol McCusker, an independent curator, writer and educator, for the show ALTERED LANDSCAPES at the LH Horton Gallery in Stockton, CA 11/18 - 12/16/2010. Both photographs are homage, one to Charles Demuth, painter and Eugene Atget, photographer.

Both photographs are unusual in that photography is the underlying foundation of my work the majority of which consists of paintings and prints digitally processed from photographs. I seldom present photographs as a final product.

Both of these photographs also are of historical architectural subjects, which is kind of a sub-genre for me, my most predominant work being landscapes.

I have written a more detailed description of both of these images to be presented in a later blog and on my website.

BURNT Chosen for Fredericksburg Show

The image 'BURNT' was chosen to be a part of the fall show "Transitions" at The Fredrick Gallery in the Fredricksburg Center for the Creative Arts, Fredricksburg, VA.

'BURNT' is part of a series of photographs made above the South fork of the American River in and adjacent to the Desolation Wilderness, the scene of of the 2001 Red Star Fire. The Red Star Fire consumed 17,500 acres of forest .The USDA-FS determined it will take 100 years to reestablish large trees (>24” diameter at breast height) and at least 250 years to develop old trees with decadence features that would be beneficial to wildlife.

Spring Creek in 2 Juried Shows

May 29 Felton, CA "Spring Creek," an image created by local artist Larry Darnell, has been chosen by the Morris Graves Museum, Eureka, CA and the Santa Cruz Art League for their respective shows: Images of Water and Transference of Light.

The Images of Light show in Eureka, CA [5/21-6/27/10] at the Morris Graves Museum is the 24th annual California Mixed Media Competition and Exhibition open to California artists. The Transference of Light show, in Santa Cruz, CA[7/2 -8/1/10] is a competition open to artists nationwide.

"Spring Creek" is a photo-based acrylic painting style image made from an original photograph of a tributary of the South Fork of the Stanislaus River near Boards Crossing in the central Sierra Nevada. Taken in early March, the spring runoff is still brisk with the shaft of mid afternoon sunlight slanting through the pines and cedars. The original underlying digital image was filtered and processed in Photoshop to create a painterly look, and originally printed on canvas.

Larry Darnell's work brings remote natural locations to viewers who wish to share quietude, serenity and the beauty of these places. For over a decade he has been combining photography and digital tools to create images that have the feel and quality of traditional paintings and prints.

His work has appeared in Central California galleries, juried exhibitions and is owned by a number of American collectors. He lives in the Santa Cruz Mountains in Central California.

"Columbia Rhythm" Chosen for Marin Museum Show

The Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, Novato, CA. recently chose Larry Darnell's image "Columbia Rhythm" for the Fifth Summer National Juried Exhibition "Private Eyes: Artist Visions". The show dates are June 19 - July 18, 2010.

"Columbia Rhythm" was taken on an early fall morning at the Columbia Historic State Park, Columbia, California, a preserved gold mining town in the Sierra Nevada foothills. The shot is of the entrance of a small cabin, its doors and walls of unpainted raw weathered wood; the uneven and time-worn sagging counterpoint to the subdued elegance and Eastern style transplanted to the raw wild gold settlement.

Larry Darnell's work brings remote natural locations to viewers who wish to share quietude, serenity and the beauty of these places. For over a decade he has been combining photography and digital tools to create images that have the feel and quality of traditional paintings and prints. Santa Cruz County Chooses Image for Collection

I was contacted by the County last week wishing to purchase a print of LAS ANIMAS CONCRETE, for their Visual Chronicle of Santa Cruz County. The image is from a photo and subsequent art print I made in winter of 2009. This was a crisp Santa Cruz coastal winter afternoon featuring altocumulus clouds at the Las Animas Concrete facility. I felt the image would work well as a Japanese-style print.

since my computer, that's an apple g5 dual died last summer, i've been trying to get myself reorganized, which may not be possible, but have, at any rate, finally started to populate my website with images instead of relying only on the fineartamerica site to rep my work.

Linux - the Trial Trail

I bitched about apple. I said I was going to go HP and linux, and now I am.

I've been way busy this summer. That's another story.

But now, like the song says, 'my boyfriend's back and you're going to be in trouble'

I'm not sure how much I'm in trouble with linux and my belief I can replace what I was doing on my mac with linux, but we'll document that...

In any event I plan to bust apple's chops on not supporting me in particular and loyal apple users for decades and multi-deca-dollars.

Well, hear back from me we do:

I'd like to point out, there are 2 fundamental problems here. The first is I presented the image this person decided to buy, and you are suggesting they not only don't want what they've seen, but they won't get what they've seen - which, as far as I can tell is unethical, and probably illegal.

The second is you are asking me to alter the image I've presented, after I've spent hours altering it the way I wanted it presented - to make a pure image. Well, I can get beyond the non-implied insult, but not quite to the steady ground of your definition of pure.

I perceive there is some kind of standard by which you people judge what will print acceptably and what won't - which is neither clear nor stated anywhere. Consequently, there is no real definition of what you 'want.'

You state I applied a blur effect. Well, I applied a lot of effects - I don't know what blur effect you refer to. The process I pursued was to create a Japanese woodblock print effect on an underlying photograph.

I guess we'll have to lose the sale unless you can be more specific regarding what you want.

I know I'm nuts to turn down the sale - but what can I do...ALL my work is not PURE, I'm sure.

Is there life after APPLE?

Purgatorio
As I was saying ..my Apple dual G5 of 3.5 years died last week. This my main machine for graphics has been a workhorse with minor problems and a 3 year APPLECARE we'll come and change your sox $300 program which ran out last January and, unlike the telemarketers' promise, cannot be extended.

So it's dead...and here am I wondering what to do...

I did a perfunctory search on the web to find some quick fixit suggestions - all of which i tried to no avail - and i also found a surprising number of whiners complaining about the same problems i was having...with mixed results from Apple support.

Now, I'll admit, I expect to get moused by most large corporations. But this is being written on an Apple g4 machine that's 10 years old...and I'm still using 2 old g4 laptops - my expectations have been set so high, it's hard for me to accept a dead lemonapple after 3.5 years.

Well, I digress...I took the box to Santa Cruz to Dave's for $75 to tell me...whoa, it's the logic board or processor: $7-800 to start. I didn't want to do that...who knows how long that fix will stay fixed?

In this day and age, that's still alot of dough for me - a light lunch for some.

During this process my friend Don asked, have you taken it to the Geniuses? I hadn't had that standing-at-the-oracle experience. Something you might do sometime, if you can't get to Lourdes or Delphi... You are confronted with a weighty coolness and light, the acolytes and Geniuses are young cool arrogant talking snakes. If you don't know about this unique Apple personality, you should think: Timmy Geithner but cool, Marky Mark with a GED or DeSoto sales people who don't need tutone shoes and brylcreme hair - hipsters deep into that 1984 commercial style trench they think they broke out of.

Well, I did get around to taking the computer to the Apple Genius Bar in Los Gatos...now this is a cultural throwback to something surreal as well. Most of the media buzz these days, when not arabcentric, is about how the dust bowl is acomin or here now, Not Los Gatos. So Los Gatos is a Must see. It's a Western Silicon Valley enclave that's always been the upscale [often white, but not always] place where those in the futureknow shake a tailfeather. Los Gatos is like an updated backlot 50's version of bustling small town america on steroids - commerce a-gogo, preening yuppies doing eurotrash and upsacle california casual. And buying their precious and weaverbird geegaws like sandbags before the impending flood.

So I went to the APPLE center. I did this because I read the tempting forum experiences of those who claimed they knew someone with MY SAME PROBLEM, APPLE gave a new machine to, only charged for parts, acted like their product was important to them and so was their customer.... WOW! Let me in on this gravy train.

Well, on a Thursday night, with my "some dirt on the case" G5, I was lucky to get an appointment at the genius bar...look way back in the photo to the blue squares, those are monitors...just above them are the iconic statements that you're at the oracle of the GENIUS BAR.

To help with the visualization, I will be taking photos on my next visit, so you without experience can visualize the intellectual separation between you and an Apple genius.

I met with the genius who was able to tell me how much it would cost me for APPLE to confirm DAVE's assessment ($75). Sure, sure...I was ready for the mea culpa...I'd read the dual G5 was acknowledged by engineers as a lemon before they pulled the production trigger.

Woof. Not so fast chucko =

Altho I was told the box was going on the rack for a 48 hour testorama, I discovered on my return from my pickup Jasonandmeg LA roundtrip [another tale for another time] they'd left a phone message the next day saying - oh, you need to replace the logic board and processors - $1800 +.

To be fair, I was told on the phone I could get it fixed cheaper someplace else. I was told I could part it out. I was told too bad. I was told there's no place for old, or recently old macs.

So for half the price of the fix, I'm getting a new HP.

But there's purgatory...that time when no longer apple and learning linux....it's going to be a slog

im sitting here with Dante [grandson 2 years] asleep upstairs, waiting for his brother to be born.

we were at the park this afternoon, that would be the park Fred Keeley said no one use because he's the kind of officious public servant who knows everything wrong, but is arrogant and a pissant to boot.

we were at the park this afternoon, and Dante, who is now physically pretty controlled, altho falls from time to time controlled, was climbing on structures pretty well.

he was interested in watching the big kids running, climbing and jumping on everything - but not wholly interested in being involved with them in any particular way.

which brings me to my point regarding my work.

there are seldom any people in my images, and if they are, it's unlikely they are anyone you can identify - how come?

i hadn't thought about it much until i watched Dante avoid the big kids.

when i have a choice, i don't like people. i'd prefer to be left alone - what legal scholars state that which defines the right to privacy. i'm not interested in listening to others' litany of problems, regurgitated perceptions of reality as dictated by the media, or careworn popular culture claptrap regarding the challenges of the earnest borgeouis middleclass, deflating retirement accounts and real estate, inflating butts, jowls, guts or metastases.

i don't mind an intellectual challenge, the wit or insight of the gifted and anything that offers the opportunity to experience something that will drag me outside or transcend myself, or provide the shock of the new - that has nothing to do with style.

i'm not just jaded, i'm just about 60 and i dont have the time for the predictable pathetic weight of this disintegrating culture.

so, i do landscapes devoid of people. not because the landscape is God's pristine garden, but because there people aren't there. i don't care how many feet have trod the place. i don't believe a place is any better due to the difficulty of inhabiting it.

at that moment i'm in it, it talks to me because no one else is there - at that moment, which i love - and for the image to share with those who also respond to an empty place for a moment to be alone.

UPS GRIPE

I don't know why I wasn't getting UPS emails - which are the only way I get their bills, but I didn't get them for a few months.

Now my UPS usage is pretty small...I gripe about another issue later, but we're not talking about a lot of dough.

So, they get around to sending me a notice by mail about my unpaid balance, about which I was partially unaware. Why partially? Well, I gave a vendor my UPS account number and asked them to send me stuff on my account to save a shipping premium they charge. Well, I get no invoices from UPS, so I'm not aware of what I owe.

I call them, and discover, aha, here are the collect charges. They ask about my email address to make sure it's the right one, and, lo and behold, it is - I still didn't get the invoices, but I paid what I believed I owed - never got any invoices from them - by email even after I called.

They added late payments. I didn't pay them.

Now they've given me notice I've got an invoice, and I got to log in to my account, and can't. Ask to get a new password by email. I get it....can't log in with the new password. Get another password from them...can't log in with that one.

Woof - I call the number in the email states they're open Mon-Fri 8am - 9pm eastern time. The message says, they're open 8am to 8pm eastern time. Too late on the west coast to call after 5pm.

Ok, I'll call tomorrow.

How much time invested? Just 1 hour so far.

I think I've found a nice approach to presenting canvas versions of some of my images, as you can see here; the traditional plein aire frame in gold or silver for those landscapes which fall into this category.

This particular frame's outside measurement is 11.5" x 13.5" art work size is 8'X 10". These frames are all wood with gold finish, and provide a handsome and reasonably priced package for an open edition print with the painterly feel of an original.

This image of a winter sunrise at Spanish Bay on the Monterey Peninsula is presently listed at ebay for $125.

I will be adding 2 more images in a little while with 2 more frames.

Manzanita [&the Flecktones]

Manzanita tree from an original digital photograph taken by the artist near Avilla Beach in coastal Central California. Presently my works are painterly realistic landscape images based on my original photographs. I call this particular aspect of my creative works "California Landscape Art."

Two things attracted me to this subject. The first is the Manzanita's compositional strength: variable-weight white, grey and red line [branches] all moving to/from a central trunk. The other is the interplay of light, shadow and color. These natural components all create an interesting visual rhythm and counterpoint in the image.

The subtitle, & the Flecktones, refers to the musical group, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, extraordinary musicians who make very interesting eclectic improvisational music based on classical, traditional bluegrass and jazz. One of the fundamental structures of musical improvisation is variations on a theme. This image of a central trunk with multiple limbs reminded me of this musical treat in general, and the Flecktones in particular. Take a listen and see if it works for you.

The subset of this particular style is watercolor. Others include Japanese style prints, oil painting, dry brush, pointillism and serigraphic.

This matted images is 12.5 x 17.5 inches, one of an edition of only 5 prints, on Museo paper, MIS Archival inks, printed, signed and numbered by the artist.

Columbine

I shot Columbine last week on a sunny afternoon in my driveway. The plant lives in a flower box, and has been happily flowering recently. This set up was lit only with bright sunlight and a white bounce card. Camera was a Canon 300D with a Pentax 100mm lens. The background area is strictly natural shadow, shot in RAW mode.

This is one of a few images presented as a photograph as opposed to my general desire to use photographs as a basis for a painterly image.

I've started adding older images to the Gallery removed when I revised the website. In many cases I've revisited these older images with some newer developmental skills. This is an interesting exercise as it's possible to get stuck in a cul de sac of reworking instead of moving forward.

I'll continue to add images, older and newer, at a more rapid pace than in the past. Over the next few weeks, I expect to have 60 to 70 active images; most with supporting text: descriptions and editions availability.

I'm spending a considerable amount of time printing as well. I've been working with Museo fine art paper recently, and feel very comfortable with it. I intend to evaluate Red River papers. I've used their photo paper with good results.

For many years I had a section of artists I like on my website. When I started dealing with more complex php coding, which was supposed to let me do less work overall, I removed these artists' images hoping to get back to them at some point. Well, that point is now.

My plan is to add artists' images I enjoy, or have some relevancy to my work, as I have time. Initial access is through my Contact page, but will grow into more of a gallery process as I go along....I hope. Howard Pyle's images from Otto of the Silver Hand are the first to be available, today.

In the book section of the website, I've started a booklist of books I've read this year, with the intention of reminding myself what I've read, make some brief comments on those I've found worthwhile...and relative to the art section, note books of interest or value to my work.

I often give books I like as presents, and have collected a number of art and photography books which I offer for sale or have linked to amazon for those interested.

Dancing Aspens at Sorensen's was shot in late October in Hope Valley just south of Lake Tahoe. Visiting Sorensen's Lodge, I had hoped to shoot fall colors, but was preceded by early snow, rain and high winds which took care of most of the leaves. Nevertheless I was able to find some limited color in a few Eastern areas more protected from the elements. There are a series of images shot at this particular time I will be adding over the next few weeks.

I've entered this with a number of other images for consideration at The Art of Photography Show in San Diego in April. Wish me luck, as I would very much like to start having my images recognized by the art world.

See the USA was shot with a Canon A70 digital camera at the Woodies on the Warf in Santa Cruz. I liked this single vehicle. It reminded me of prepping for commercial shoots, waiting for the weather. Back when gas was $.25. Happy 4th of July.

I'll be annotating images as I add them to the website starting today. I've come to the end of a fairly long struggle revising the gallery section, and will continue to do so as I go along, I'm sure.

In some ways, I'm starting over with my workflow driven by this website. I'm revisiting every image, now that I've gotten better at Photoshop and revising and reprinting virtually every image.
